Our fleet manager on GPS tracking, driver relationships and delivering more for every customer.
James keeps our fleet running like clockwork. From GPS tracking to driver relationships, he is behind the reliability our customers count on every day. We caught up with him between dispatches to talk about what fleet excellence really means.
What does a great day look like?
“Every truck where it needs to be, every driver home safe, and not a single customer wondering where their freight is. Quiet days are good days in my world—if my phone is not ringing, it means everything is going to plan.”
How has technology changed the job?
“GPS visibility means we spot issues before they become problems. If there is weather or an accident ahead, we can reroute and keep deliveries on time instead of explaining a delay after the fact. The data also helps us take better care of the equipment, so trucks spend more time on the road and less in the shop.”
What is the key to good driver relationships?
“Respect and communication. Our drivers are the face of Humble to every customer, and they do a hard job. When you treat people well, give them the tools to succeed and listen when they flag a problem, they go the extra mile—literally. Low turnover is not an accident; it is the result of a lot of small things done right.”
What are you most proud of?
“Our on-time record and our safety record, hands down. Those two numbers tell you almost everything about how a fleet is run. Keeping both where they are, year after year, takes a whole team—and I am proud to be part of it.”
